At the Pre-Fall Shows for 2014- both mens and womens- presented looks easily divisible into your average American High School stereotypes. Think the cafeteria scene in ‘Mean Girls’ but designed by the likes of Calvin Klein and Marc Jacobs. Let’s take a look at who made the roll call this season…
1. THE JOCKS
You think you own the place don’t you? You’re so vain because you’re good at something, praised by all and look sexy doing it. Enter the jocks!
2. THE REBEL
Rebel, rebel on the wall, who’s the badass of them all? The ones smoking roll-ups, leaning against the back of the gym, wearing black leather with long scraggly hair. A bit of a monster and a heartthrob all in one, how can we resist? The pointed boots and jailbird stripes at Milly are reason to kill alone. The embellished beanie trend is present throughout the ladder from runway to Topshop with Versace’s version no doubt the fiercest of them all.
3. THE STONERS
Beanie, long shorts, graffiti print tee- this all reminds me a little too much of the ‘Lords of Dogtown’ wannabes from high schools in Los Angeles.
4. THE NERD
While Francisco Costa of Calvin Klein went for a figurative interpretation with tech-inspired printed sweatshirts looking like a computer switchboard to embrace the future power of the nerd, Peter Jensen looked back to a childhood memory where being a nerd simply meant wearing the horrific jumper your mother picked out for you. Both collections aim to display the evolution of the nerd from bottom of the food chain to becoming the coolest kids at school. Somewhere in between is Christopher Kane’s subtle DNA strand motif sewn into the coats amping up the scientific motifs he touched upon in his flora-themed SS 2013 women’s show.
5. SCHOOL SPIRIT
You know who you are. You have the enthusiasm of a cheerleader matched with the need to succeed of a dork. You’re the teacher’s pet, captain of every committee, over-achieving Patty Simcox of Grease: you’re just got too much school spirit. But hey, the letterman jacket never really goes out of style…
